"While my new role was exciting, every day also added another unknown. Letters arrived in the mail for payments on loans I didn’t know existed. Suppliers sent monthly statements with late notices and fees stamped in red. Unpaid credit card statements showed rolling balances and interest charges. To make matters worse, despite my daily cleaning and the baited traps I had set, mice kept using my desk for a toilet. Thus far, working here felt like that scene of Calypso’s maelstrom in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. A giant whirlpool of paper tried to take me down into the underworld, while I was bombarded with cannon fire."
"As I clicked around on the spreadsheet, some numbers did not seem to add up. On the tab with our labor costs, the employees’ pay rates were not current and the insurance cost for each employee type had not been updated in several years. Even the equipment rates were off. Each new tab showed inconsistencies and errors of an Excel sheet out of touch with its software counterpart. The report’s projected “profit” was also incorrect because it assumed that we billed our customers on a regular schedule, which we didn’t. What’s the point of using a P&L sheet that doesn’t show us our P&L?"
"My mind plunged down a rabbit hole. Had Barb been paying her bills from the company’s accounts? Did the owner have an illegitimate family hidden in the woods? Maybe an employee had uncovered unsafe working conditions, and this was hush money?"
"I wasn’t hungry when I got home. I just felt sick.
My stomach churned as I thought about work. How could that many accounts get out of balance and someone not notice? How could the owner accept that crippling debt was normal and have no plan for getting out of it?
"Peace washed over me. I felt as though God Himself had positioned me in this role, and I was thoroughly enjoying it. Is this what it feels like to have purpose in work? Not just warming a seat to pay the bills, but actually enjoying the work so much it feels like divine destiny? I had become so confident and comfortable in my role that when new challenges arose, panic and fear had been replaced by calm and courage. I didn’t need to fight my way through it. I just did my best work and trusted God for the outcome. It was a dream come true."
